MER Clinic: Western and Atlantic

Presented by Lee Rainey @ NMRA National, Atlanta, GA, 1995

Best known as the scene of the Great Locomotive Chase, the Western and Atlantic connected Chattanooga and Atlanta, and in the 1850s and 1860s served both farming country and flourishing industrial cities. Operated as a key supply route first by the Confederacy and then by the Northen forces, it combined heavy traffic with great scenery and fascinating operations. This clinic reviews the rolling stock, physical plant, and operations of the Western & Atlantic in the era 1850-1865, and concludes with a layout design based on the railroad during the Civil War.
